Many people suffering from depression take antidepressant medications and feel better. But drugs can be expensive, cause side effects and when it's time to quit drugs , depressed people are vulnerable to relapse. Meditation on the basis of consciousness, often in conjunction with cognitive therapy ( MBCT ) , can reduce or eliminate these problems.

MBCT is a combination of Eastern meditation and cognitive therapy in the West. You sit in silence and you focus on your breathing, it helps to have a sense of detachment . You notice your thoughts ebb and flow , but without judgment. You're just aware of them without trying to change them. You are separated from them . This understanding is based on cognitive therapy, and can help break the cycle of depression.

The problem with being anxious or depressed is that these negative thoughts in your mind prevail. When you feel bad you tend to dwell on the bad things in your life and not good . This worsens your mood and takes you into a downward spiral. MBCT can break this cycle.

Although meditation is entirely secular, and you do not need to be religious to meditate , Buddhism is often associated . This is what the Dalai Lama wrote in his book, How to Practice : The Way to a meaningful life :

If you can not stop worrying about something in the past or what might happen in the future, change your approach to the inhalation and exhalation of your breath . Or recite the mantra om mani padme hum * (pronounced " om mani padmay hum" ) . Since the mind can not concentrate on two things at once , one of those old mediations causes anxiety to subside.

Mindfulness meditation strengthens your ability to control your thoughts. When you are anxious or depressed , may, in practice, accept your thoughts and let go of compassion for yourself .

How does it work ?

The researchers found that brain imaging there are specific areas of the brain involved in the control of the concern. Mindfulness meditation can reduce anxiety by regulating the process of thought. And kindness meditation, which focuses on thoughts of compassion for oneself and others , seems to help . The two types of meditation , over time , alter the structure of the brain and can give anxiety and depression sufferers some relief.

The problem with being anxious or depressed is that these negative thoughts in your mind prevail. When you feel bad you tend to dwell on the bad things in your life and not good .

* The translation is " Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus " , although there are many interpretations of the religious significance of those words.
